At present, I have a substantial portion of my own money invested in accordance with the Green Valley & Black Diamond portfolios. Those suit my personal investment needs.
But they may not suit yours, and that’s why we run 6 different portfolios with varying levels of expected risk and expected return.
Black Diamond Global Growth
Black Diamond is a balanced global growth portfolio designed to give investors access to both developed and emerging markets. It also aims to be diversified by asset class and will at times allocate to commodities in addition to its core of international stocks and bonds.
Copper Canyon is a medium risk dividend portfolio. For the last 80 years, dividends have provided nearly half of the stock market’s total return. This portfolio seeks to maximize income potential subject to “blue-chip” quality standards and the ability of its targets to increase their dividends over time. Copper Canyon adheres to my #1 rule of dividend investing: don’t chase yield.
Green Valley is a conservative portfolio designed for investors who need to protect their capital but want more growth than offered by Treasury Bonds. By incorporating everything from high-quality corporate debt to blue chip dividend stocks to low-risk alternative strategies, Green Valley aims to meaningfully outperform Treasuries with only slightly greater volatility.
Red Ridge is an aggressive portfolio, but not the type of aggressive portfolio your financial advisor may have told you about. In our mind, “aggressive” doesn’t necessarily translate to “high risk” and an aggressive investment stance doesn’t mean hoping for one or two high-flying stocks in a basket of several to pan out. In Red Ridge, we seek to tackle what the market throws our way head-on by making a range of unique bets with favorable risk/reward characteristics.
Purple Mountain Total Return
Purple Mountain is a balanced, total return designed to give investors access broad access to equities, bonds, and alternatives. With this degree of diversification, it’s the type of portfolio I’d run for a small institution or for a large, sophisticated individual investor.
Blue Mesa is a long/short portfolio. It’s for investors that know what they’re doing. Or for those who want to launch their own hedge fund. It’s also where you’ll find some of our highest conviction positions, a place where we buy a bunch of the stuff we like and sell short a bunch of stuff we don’t like. The result is a unique portfolio with meaningfully lower volatility than the broad market.
